Second Bath
You may have already seen this picture on my facebook profile, but I can't help posting it again. It's Oscar after his second bath, and in it he looks as shook up from the experience as he did the first time. As I've found myself saying a lot lately, "It's hard to be a baby."

Oscar The Social Butterfly
We've managed to get out (or have friends visit us) a few times this last week. Oscar has many new friends to get to know. Here are just a few...
Debbie came for dinner and a movie ("Baby Mama"). Oscar wowed her with several wardrobe changes due to at least one of each kind of "baby mishap".
Suzie brought guava juice (that her pregnant self lost the taste for) and listened to way too many Oscar stories.
Oscar enjoyed his first dinner party at Robert and Patrick's home.

Kathy gave Oscar the cutest outfits ever! We look forward to showing him off in them.
Pete just returned from nine months in Germany. Still jetlagged, he was a natural with Oscar.

Patrick and Oscar got along really well.
Oscar enjoyed a visit with Jarf and Nicole.
Oscar's Return to the Birth Center
Oscar went back to the Bryn Mawr Birthing Center last Wednesday to (as Trina, the midwife who delivered him, described it) "get his pencil sharpened". It was only mildly traumatic (more so for Mom than anyone else), and Oscar was able to say hi once again to Trina. We were so pleased she was the midwife for his arrival and happy to get to see her again.

One Week Old
Oscar is now a week old. It is hard to believe that it has only been a week, and at the same time the week has gone by quickly. Yesterday, John summed up our excitement about this "milestone" when he said, "He made it a week and we didn't kill him!"
Other "firsts" happened during this week as well: Oscar went on two long walks (through which he mostly slept), he got a bath (given by two nervous parents reading the "directions" from a book), he went to the grocery store, and he made his first public appearance at Open Studio Night at PAFA (where he was admired by all).
We anticipate more "firsts" and adventures with Oscar in the weeks, months, and years to come...

Middle Name
Because Oscar arrived almost 2 weeks early, we still had a few things left to do on The List. The most important was deciding on a middle name. After his birth, we were forced to spend a little extra time considering this, as his birth certificate sat waiting for this bit of information. After much thought, and even a few opinions, we chose Kedric, which means "splendid gift" and seems the perfect way to express how we feel about the kid. The "K" name also honors grandpa Kenneth and gives Oscar the sweet initials O.K. Williams... so Oscar Kedric Williams, he is.
Oscar Has Arrived
It is hard to believe that Oscar is nearly five days old. He was born last Saturday, February 7th, and as anyone whose had that experience can attest, our lives have not been the same since. We are enjoying getting to know him, hold him, take a ridiculous number of pictures of him, feed him, change him, and generally let our lives be taken over by this tiny person. We are getting considerably less sleep (and the sleep we do get is interrupted regularly), and our daily routines are no longer routines. I (Rachel) am also getting used to the reality that my body is no longer my own (which I somehow thought I might get back once he was officially born--ha!).
We will do our best to post photos and notes about Oscar's life and adventures, especially for our family and friends who live so far away. We are thrilled to share this new experience with you...
